Product Description

High Purity 99.9999% N2 Gas Packaged In 40L - 50L Cylinders Used in Welding

Description:

Nitrogen is a chemical element with symbol N and atomic number 7. The formula is N2.

Nitrogen occurs in all organisms, primarily in amino acids, in the nucleic acids and in the energy transfer molecule adenosine triphosphate. The human body contains about 3% by mass of nitrogen, the fourth most abundant element in the body after oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen. The nitrogen cycle describes movement of the element from the air, into the biosphere and organic compounds, then back into the atmosphere.

Nitrogen gas is an industrial gas produced by the fractional distillation of liquid air, or by mechanical means using gaseous air. Nitrogen gas generators using membranes or PSA are typically more cost and energy efficient than bulk delivered nitrogen.

Commercial nitrogen is often a byproduct of air-processing for industrial concentration of oxygen for steelmaking and other purposes. When supplied compressed in cylinders it is often called OFN (oxygen-free nitrogen).

In a chemical laboratory, it is prepared by treating an aqueous solution of ammonium chloride withsodium nitrite.

At atmospheric pressure, molecular nitrogen condenses at −195.79 °C and freezes at −210.01 °C into the beta hexagonal close-packed crystal allotropic form. Below −237.6 °C nitrogen assumes the cubic crystal allotropic form. Liquid nitrogen, a fluid resembling water in appearance, but with 80.8% of the density, is a common cryogen.

In general, nitrogen is unreactive at standard temperature and pressure. N2reacts spontaneously with few reagents, being resilient to acids and bases as well as oxidants and most reductants. When nitrogen reacts spontaneously with a reagent, the net transformation is often called nitrogen fixation.
Elemental lithium reacts in an atmosphere of N2 to give lithium nitride.
