Description:
 
Hydrogen chloride is a nonflammable liquefied compressed gas packaged in cylinders under its own vapor pressure of 613 psig at 70°F. It can fume on contact with moist air. The degree of fuming is related to the amount of humidity in the air.
 
Hydrogen chloride is a diatomic molecule, consisting of a hydrogen atom H and a chlorine atom Cl connected by a covalent single bond. In part because of its high polarity, HCl is very soluble in water. Upon contact, H2O and HCl combine to hydrochloric acid and it's a strong acid. Because of its acidic nature, hydrogen chloride is corrosive, particularly in the presence of moisture. The pure chlorine gas can be combined with hydrogen to produce hydrogen chloride in the presence of UV light.
 
The reaction with water will produce heat and form very corrosive hydrochloric acid. It has a repulsive, irritating, acidic odor that can usually be detected at low concentrations (<5ppm). Direct skin contact can cause severe burns. The compound hydrogen chloride has the chemical formula HCl. At room temperature, it is a colorless gas, which forms white fumes of hydrochloric acid upon contact with atmospheric humidity. Hydrogen chloride gas and hydrochloric acid are important in technology and industry. Hydrochloric acid, the aqueous solution of hydrogen chloride, is also commonly given the formula HCl.
