carbon monoxide co safety data sheet MSDS.output.p...

Description:

CO, Coal gas, which was widely used before the 1960s for domestic lighting, cooking, and heating, had carbon monoxide as a significant fuel constituent. Some processes in modern technology, such as iron smelting, still produce carbon monoxide as a byproduct.

In biology, carbon monoxide is naturally produced by the action of heme oxygenase 1 and 2 on the heme from hemoglobin breakdown. This process produces a certain amount of carboxyhemoglobin in normal persons, even if they do not breathe any carbon monoxide. Following the first report that carbon monoxide is a normal neurotransmitter in 1993, as well as one of three gases that naturally modulate inflammatory responses in the body (the other two being nitric oxide and hydrogen sulfide), carbon monoxide has received a great deal of clinical attention as a biological regulator. In many tissues, all three gases are known to act as anti-inflammatories, vasodilators, and promoters of neovascular growth. Clinical trials of small amounts of carbon monoxide as a drug are ongoing. Nonetheless, too much carbon monoxide causes carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide has a molar mass of 28.0, which makes it slightly lighter than air, whose average molar mass is 28.8. According to the ideal gas law, CO is therefore less dense than air.

Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is an inorganic, colorless, odorless, non-flammable, extremely potent greenhouse gas, which is an excellentelectrical insulator. SF
6 has an octahedral geometry, consisting of six fluorine atoms attached to a central sulfur atom. It is a hypervalent molecule. Typical for a nonpolar gas, it is poorly soluble in water but quite soluble in nonpolar organic solvents. It is generally transported as a liquefied compressed gas. It has a density of 6.12 g/L at sea level conditions, considerably higher than the density of air.

CO can be mixed with SF6 and which can be used in many aspects.

Applications:

Chemical industry

Carbon monoxide is an industrial gas that has many applications in bulk chemicals manufacturing. Large quantities of aldehydes are produced by the hydroformylation reaction of alkenes, carbon

monoxide, and H2. Hydroformylation is coupled to the Shell higher olefin

process to give precursors to detergents

Meat coloring

Carbon monoxide is used in modified atmosphere packaging

systems in the US, mainly with fresh meat products such as beef, pork, and fish to keep them looking fresh

Medicine In biology, carbon monoxide is naturally produced by the action of heme oxygenase 1 and 2 on the heme fromhemoglobin breakdown. F6 is used as a contrast agent for ultrasound imaging
Lasers Carbon monoxide has also been used as a lasing medium in high-powered infrared lasers
Electrical industry Other main uses include an inert gas for the casting of magnesium, and as an inert filling for insulated glazing windows
Dielectric medium SF6 is used in the electrical industry as a gaseous dielectric medium for high-voltage circuit breakers, switchgear, and other electricalequipment, often replacing oil filled circuit breakers (OCBs) that can contain harmful PCBs
Tracer compound Sulfur hexafluoride was the tracer gas used in the first roadway air dispersion model calibration
Electrostatic loudspeakers Has been used in electrostatic loudspeakers because of its high dielectric strength and high molecular weight
Etchant

SF6 plasma is also used in the semiconductor industry as an
